The Mistwood
- The Mistwood is a forest that engulfs both Oakenshire to the south and to the north Havenspass.
- Its western boundary is the Stormhill Mountains and eastern boundary is the Cloudfire Mountains.
- The name itself comes from the constant almost cloud like fog and mist that perpetuate the place. Humidity is intense. Usually when people refer to “The Mistwood” they're referring to just the section between Oakenshire & Havenspass however as that's the range of the densest fog.
- Havenspass Trail aka the “H.T.” is the one and only main road going through it all the way to the northern port city of Mythburg for purposes of trade & travel. There are lesser paths, but for the most part it's a single north/south road scenario.
- Lately, for no reason anyone has explained, undead seem to be a threat in the forest.
- Mushrooms grow really well with the gloom and humidity here. Sometimes they end up on pizzas at Nailati in Havenspass, and sometimes one might wonder if there are far more complex things in The Mistwood involving fungi. Notable culinary character Sniv The Seasoner is fond of the mushrooms in the forest as well.
- Mistwood Sap comes from the roots of Mistwood trees. It is known to have a sleeping potion like effect on humanoids, with a delayed effect1). It effects everyone differently and isn't magical, just chemical.
Lumber
- While it has plenty of variety of trees, vines, mushrooms and other plant life, it does grow a namesake kind tree simply called “Mistwood”. Mistwood is a hardwood tree that thrives in the normally foggy environment of the forest. Luckily for the locals Mistwood also has a great value as an export and has been an economic boon over time. Mistwood grows best at higher elevations which makes it most abundant closer to Havenspass where elevation ranges up to 5000 feet.
- Mistwood has one problematic trait due to its roots. The roots reach deep and they tend to leak a seriously sticky sap, which has an effect, perhaps medicinal if used correctly, of rending humanoids unconcious for long periods of time. Effects vary from individual to individual.2)
- There is a Wood Guild in Havenspass that has great interest in sustainably logging the forest.
Special Areas/Notes
- Niflome Moonshiners - A secretive little operation to produce moonshine, located far too close to the Elven Cordage /Vine harvesting area.
- The Thick - a super dense forest area of The Mistwood that is nearly impossible to navigate due to all the plants, vines, and sometimes monsters. The main road is usually the best way to go through this area. The Hobgoblin Tunnel is within the thick near the road, used as an alternate bypass.
Dungeons
- “Hogoblin Tunnel” - a (drama themed) dungeon that acts as an alternate way to get through The Thick when things like Shambling Plants are harassing travelers on the main road. The Hobgoblin Tunnel is a tunnel system full of as the name implies, Hobgoblins, and their social lives seem to be a bit dramatic. To get through this tunnel, you must go straight, never veering off into the side passages.
- The Party, particularly Jules, murdered two hobgoblins lovers named Bill & Steve the first time this tunnel had to be traversed. The rest of the hobgoblins, being lawful neutral, were then paid off to allow for safe passage. Note for future reference that there's a statue down there (unseen by players as of yet) and some of the hobgoblins have Eldritch Blast, which implies some Warlock activity. One of them was named “Rex”.
- “Hydra Swamp” - a swamp area slightly to the southwest of Havenspass, where The Party once defeated a 4 headed hydra. However several hydra are known to live in the area. Pydraxcalibur was found being guarded by the defeated hydra. What might other hydras be guarding?
- “Lethal Leaf Hole” - a (thrilled themed) dungeon on the southwestern side of The Mistwood. It was entered by Urist & Jules as they attempted to track down fellow Party member Alimir who had turned into a werewolf. It is notably entered by jumping into a pile of seemingly living and moving fallen leaves that plug the 30 foot long vertical shaft style entrance.
- Locally Known Dungeon #1 - Just to the southwest of Havenspass off of a road that leads toward the Stormhill Mountains is a dungeon that people tangle with sometimes. Left for PCs to explore for now without more detail.
- Locally Known Dungeon #2 - Off to the east and slight north of Havenspass is a locally known dungeon that people tangle with sometimes. Left for PCs to explore for now without more detail.
