Jim Bob The Bullfrog
Let me just preface this by saying that this frog was given to the party by Kim at the Necro Cave bridge simply because someone else that probably didn't survive being there left it laying around and Kim didn't want to deal with a pet. It was given to the party, c/o Eyrun, along with a small glass terrarium it lives in and described as being a frog without a name. That's it. But I know how my players think and act, so this simple frog gets an entry here because somehow they'll be incapable of letting a frog just live its best life. Also as the Dungeon Master, I too am incapable of having a frog that gets to just live its best life. It must do epic things.
Backstory
Jim Bob The Bullfrog now has an official backstory, starting before the point where The Party meets him via Kim. Why? Because as predicted above, this bullfrog does not just get to live a simple life.
- Well-Water Filtration Adaptation
- Jim Bob spent months living inside the Warlock Well’s stone lip, sipping the magically charged water that collects after every transaction. Magical insects (drawn to the well’s ambient magic) became his primary food source. Over time his amphibian physiology evolved to filter and store arcane residue from them. Now any spell or magic used around him gets filtered the same way, turning into a temporary stored power surge. It is quite possible that he has the further unique trait of being able to process other things such as diseases, curses, poisons and more. What can he do with that power? We're not sure what the full scope of that is just yet.
History In The Party
- Party adopts him as an unnamed frog at Necro Cave courtesy of Kim.
- Eyrun immediately names it “Jim Bob The Bullfrog.”
- Frog becomes instrumental in saving the party from a cage trap inside of Wyrd Uncle Lugo's man hole cover dungeon. I'm just going to go ahead and award the frog 25XP for that.
- The Party goes to the cloud island of Mustardia and Eyrun reaches a conclusion about keeping pets that Jules would seemingly never make, which is that they can't really care for pets while being adventurers. So Eyrun releases Jim Bob The Bullfrog to an indoor pond in the room of a Bullywug Knight to live a better life.
- This threw the DM for a loop because certainly players MUST adopt and make a huge deal of cute defenseless things! Is the DM becoming attached? Damnit.
- An annoying Quickling sabotaged the pond and its pump system in the room and caused it all to flood out into a hallway, setting Jim Bob free in Mustardia Manor.
- Jim Bob quote “came in clutch” by using his long sticky tongue to snatch an unexploded slapple out of the hands of the Quickling as the party was in their final battle with it. Eyrun then forgot her prior hesitation about pets and placed Jim Bob ceremoniously on her shoulder, taking him with her for the rest of the session. Let's say he gets another 25XP for that and he's still with the party at this time.
- Note that Jim Bob has a long sticky tongue he can grab stuff with for future sake of argument in the fantasy setting.
- As a bullfrog let's go ahead and say he weighs 1LBS as a young bullfrog and base him on the American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus).
- Jim Bob has a secret talent, which is eating fleas that are near him. Unbeknown to Eyrun, he's done this at least one very important time. 25XP for doing it.
- Jim Bob is willing to be fed by hanging out around meat piles cast off as trash by butchers. It isn't glamorous, but he likes that it attracts flies.
- Jim Bob absorbed some fireball energy from the Fire Opal Staff and used it to burp a fireball up and destroy some skeletons in the Lethal Leaf Dungeon. 25XP for being awesome.
- Players became aware that he is not a normal frog finally.
- Jim Bob The Bullfrog was present in in the “Tarot Trauma Dungeon” created by A.L.I.Z.A. and therefor absorbed a lot of magical energy involving teleporting and creation. He continued to be overlooked, or mostly forgotten as a companion by Eyrun who technically holds his terrarium as a possession. So this bullfrog just keeps getting jacked up with more magical energy that it might regurgitate at some later point. Also, he's frequently left hungry as no one remembers to feed him.
- Jim Bob was also present in the same dungeon when the Cloud Stone Ring activated and healed Alimir back to full health. Yet another magic that may have been absorbed by the frog.
- Jim Bob The Bullfrog croaked up a fireball and did a teleport while The Party was fighting a 4 headed hydra at Hydra Swamp. This combat led to a large amount of XP for party members, and Jim Bob gets +100 for his role in it.
- Jim Bob was present for a couple of uses of the Wand Of Wonders when Eyrun used it, the result of which was chaotic reduce & enlarge magic. Jim Bob himself was on the person of Eyrun as she was shrunk and shrunk for the moment too.
- Jim Bob The Bullfrog was around with the party as once again all sorts of magics were used, including fireballs and that which emanates from a Kuo-Toa Idol.
