Little Red Riding Rine

Rine is a Goliath monster hunter whose life has been defined by an endless hunt through The Mistwood and beyond. Born and raised in a remote cabin high in the Cloudfire Mountains, he grew up with parents who deliberately isolated themselves from society, teaching him the ways of the wilds, tracking, and survival from a young age.

The Wolf

He left the mountains as a young adult after a single fateful event that still shapes every step he takes. One harsh winter, a half-elf girl named Xzera set out from Havenspass Commune along the lesser trails, wearing a bright crimson cloak dyed with Mistwood berries and carrying a basket of cheese, maple syrup, and elven cordage as a gift for her grandmother who lived alone in a remote cabin.

A beast that walked like a man and spoke with a voice like scraping leaves had already killed the old woman and taken her place. When Xzera reached the cabin, the creature toyed with her, savoring her terror.

Rine, then only a young Goliath out on his first long-range scout from the Cloudfire Mountains, found the overturned basket two days later. Bloody prints and the sharp, sweet reek of Mistwood sap led him deep into The Thick. He tracked the creature to a glade, where he heard Xzera’s muffled cries.

Using the same elven cordage from her wrists, he rigged a snare outside the cabin and baited it with a heavy dose of the sap—known for its powerful sleeping-potion effect. When the werewolf emerged, the trap snapped shut and the sap quickly dulled its senses. Rine stepped forward with his greataxe and opened the creature from throat to groin.

Inside the beast’s belly he found Xzera’s grandmother, dead of course. That single night set the course of Rine’s entire life.

As Rine finished the beast, one of its young whelps—drawn by the commotion lunged from the underbrush to protect its sire. Rine’s return swing caught the whelp across the muzzle, leaving a deep scar that never properly healed. The surviving mate and whelps (including the now-adult scarred one) still roam the southern Mistwoods near Oakenshire.

Monster Hunter

Since that hunt, Rine has never stopped moving. He wanders the roads, passes, and hidden trails of Havenspass and The Mistwoods, taking contracts to slay beasts, undead, and worse. Every monster he kills is, in his mind, one more step toward ending the bloodline that once wore a grandmother’s shawl and a girl’s red cloak.

He still carries a small vial of the Mistwood sap (which he gathers from the Lethal Leaf Hole on his belt—useful for subduing dangerous quarry—and keeps the cleaned and re-dyed red cloak as a reminder in his pack, though he has never worn it. The scar on his own arm itches on foggy nights, and the howls that echo from The Thick sometimes sound almost like a personal challenge.

To most folk in Havenspass he is simply “the monster hunter“. Only a few know the story behind the endless roaming, and fewer still understand that every contract he takes ultimately traces back to a red cloak, a grandmother’s cabin, and a promise to make sure the woods never swallow another child again. His hatred of werewolves is extreme.
