Stonefist Discovers Niflome Moonshiners

Stonefist had never liked the woods. Trees whispered secrets he couldn’t crack with a pickaxe, and roots tripped men the way loose rock never did. But the Rockworks Guild needed coin, and discreet transport of strong drink past watchful eyes paid better than honest ore most seasons.

He went alone. Nine-and-a-half feet of hill-giant muscle wrapped in cured hides, great-axe slung across his back. The Mistwood swallowed the mountain light, turning it to silver haze. Stonefist followed smoke that didn’t rise straight, the low thunder of stills, and the faint sweet-rot of fermenting Mistwood berries.

On the third dawn a crossbow bolt thunked into the trunk an inch from his ear. He didn’t flinch.

“Speak your name or lose your skull,” a voice called from the canopy—high, precise, unafraid.

“Stonefist,” he rumbled. “Leader of the Rockworks. I come to trade.”

A rope ladder uncoiled. At its top waited three small figures. Their skin was a deep, misty blue, like twilight stone under fog. Ears swept back in graceful points, eyes large and luminous even in the filtered light. They moved with the quiet confidence of those who preferred shadow to sun.

Niflome, the reclusive kin of gnomes who had long ago fled into gloom and underground places to escape something they still only half-named. The leader stepped forward. She wore patched leathers studded with copper fittings and carried a wrench like a noble’s scepter. A single white braid hung over one shoulder, threaded with tiny brass gears. Her violet eyes studied the Goliath without fear.

“You smell of stone and blood, Goliath,” she said. “And ambition. Dangerous combination in my wood.”

Stonefist showed his empty hands. “My guild moves iron and granite. We also move… discretion. Your stills sing at night. I can carry barrels that never see daylight. You keep your secrets. I keep my cut. Fair?”

One of her companions—a younger male with oil-stained fingers—whispered in their tongue. The leader answered without breaking eye contact. “Names have power,” she said. “I am Veyra Coilwhisper. These are my kin. We do not trust easily, Stonefist. The last outsiders who found us tried to burn us out for the recipe.”

Stonefist grinned, teeth like chipped granite. “I don’t burn what I can use. And I don’t share what’s mine.”

Veyra’s lips twitched. She gestured; the mist parted. Below lay the entrance to the Niflome Moonshiners' hidden cavern system: a suddenly more obvious assortment of exhaust vents and copper frameworks jutting out of nearby rocks as well. The air shimmered with heat and the heady scent of secret mash. “Prove you can keep a secret,” she said, pressing a small copper cup into his massive fist.

The liquid inside burned silver. Stonefist drank. Fire, frost, and starlight rolled down his throat. For a heartbeat the world sharpened—every leaf edge, every heartbeat—then settled into warm steadiness. He exhaled a cloud that smelled faintly of mountain frost. “Good,” he growled. “Ten barrels to start. More when the caravans roll.”

Veyra studied the empty cup; the towering Goliath had not flinched. “Ten barrels,” she agreed. “And if trouble finds us… you handle the outsiders. We are brewers and makers, not warriors.”

Stonefist planted the butt of his axe in the earth like a claim stake. “They become our problem together.”

Veyra smiled fully for the first time. “Then we have a pact, Stonefist of the Rock. Drink once more—to secrets, strong stone, and the shadow that watches us all.”

They drank. In that moment, neither spoke Garko’s name aloud, but every Niflome present felt the faint, familiar stir of old belief and older power. It was simply part of who they were. A few years later, when curious souls in Havenspass begin asking about midnight wagons and missing shipments, some old miners still mutter about the day the biggest Goliath in the pass walked out of the Mistwood carrying a barrel on each shoulder and the faint scent of strange moonshine on his breath.
