Preston

Preston is an Undead Bard who describes himself as the “Bard Of The Seas.” This means he has a sailor background. He was initially encountered in the campaign at the Graveyard Camp where he's been hanging out for a long unknown amount of time.1) According to Preston his sailor friends bet him that he could not “seduce a dragon.” He came up to the top of the mountains to prove them wrong as part of that bet, did in fact manage to “seduce” a wyvern2), and got burned to a crisp as part of it.

  • Undead Humanoid.3)
  • Male
  • Bard/Sailor background
  • Friendly
  • Minifigure - Using a very old “Heroclix” brand “Troll Zombie” figure with just one arm, although that doesn't necessarily mean that Preston is that race/type. It was just handy at the time of the game session.

Undead Status

Preston died because a wyvern shall we say, “shagged him to death.” The tale of how he became an Undead after that however is unknown at this time.

Fuck Boi Status

The status of being a “Fuck Boi4) is entirely the fault of the actual players in our campaign. As soon as I, the DM, who was improvising details suggested the stereotype that a Bard was trying to seduce a dragon, “Fuck Boi” was thrown into conversation at the game table. Apparently one player had multiple ex boyfriends named “Preston” who were total man whores or something and since I told everyone that they had to name this new NPC. Preston stuck, and now this campaign has an undead by that name.

Backstory & Plot Hooks

With Eyrun's quest to become an adult by visiting the Cloud Giant Shrine and her getting the rest of The Party to follow her up the Cloudfire Mountains also trying to find Eyrun's half sister Phoebe, it was inevitable that they'd rest at the Graveyard Camp and Preston would introduce himself, asking for help getting back down the mountain. This makes Preston a perfect pre-planned catalyst for important events and backstories of the campaign.5)

  • Preston has a Jade Ring on his finger that perfectly matches Urist's Jade Ring. He revealed that it came from an island he knows about and will take The Party there IF they get him off the mountains.6).
  • Preston being a sailor and “Bard Of The Seas” makes him an ideal NPC for any quests that involve getting onto the seas of the campaign setting. He might be a little bit out of the loop of current events, but the seas are still the seas…
  • When Eyrun rested at the Cloud Giant Shrine she had a dream/vision of Preston in Goldvale. Goldvale is where Pirate Captain Salty Merlot frequently makes stops, and has its own dramas and plots. What this may mean for the future is unknown.
  • Urist, Eyrun, Jules + Milo & Marion met up with Preston in an attempt to get off the Cloudfire Mountains. Ultimately Eyrun gave Preston the Disorienting Scrunchie and affixed it to him by cutting off some of her own hair & tying it to Preston's bony undead form. This loophole allowed him to activate it, and he vanished… to somewhere that he'll feel lost.7)
  • Eyrun's dream a couple days before this featured Preston being in Goldvale, which is in fact somewhere Preston would feel disoriented by. So there is a chance that he ended up there thanks to the scrunchie.
  • According to Peg Leg Yeet, his “great-great grandpappy” is Preston. Who Yeet believes died and was lost at sea well before Yeet was even born. But they appear to be related.

Goldvale Era

When Preston gets transported via the Disorienting Scrunchie he ends up inside the special room of the Mirror House in Goldvale. This is in fact what Eyrun's dream foretold. This puts him in immediate contact with a Kuo-toa Idol & statue which do something special to him. They don't bring him back from being undead but they do seem to restore him to seemingly having living flesh, making him an almost passable living looking “human”. He quickly learns the town, takes over ownership of the Mirror House since the last owners went missing a couple months before his arrival8), and with his ongoing “healed” state 3 more Kuo-Toa statues quickly are formed in the special room. His attitude toward this is accepting since he is from the very same Tropeical Sea that the idol originates from and somehow this is alright by him, although is not likely to be viewed with open arms by others.

Goldvale Development

  • Will likely find Urist coming to look for him.
  • Will likely have certain former owners annoyed about the house situation.
  • Should have an interest in the land pirates.
1)
Roughly between when the Giants died out on the mountains and the present. He certainly has not been in circulation in the campaign in recent history.
2)
Technically a dragon.
3)
Race Unknown.
4)
We don't care about this website getting an “R” rating.
5)
A lot of undead NPCs work for this same purpose because they've been around and seen or done things.
6)
This is yet another character that Urist might be able to learn from if he chooses
7)
Goldvale
8)
The Party.
