Half Star Portal Stones
Long, Long Ago, a set of Half Star Portal Stones, magical items, each about the size of a tennis ball and shaped like half of a basic 5 point star, were created. These magical stones could open up a portal between each other, across any realm or plane of existance, or to points near one or the other, not having to resolve the portals at the exact location of the stone, just so to speak, in the region wherever the tears in the fabric of space time were easiest. The details of their creation and other purposes for at the time are unknown. Some records were crudely kept in relation to this.
Long Ago, the town of Oakenveil formed with the goal of opening The Oakenveil Portal. Some of the old records, having deteriorated a lot already, had been found, which led to this course of action. One of the Half Star Portal Stones was noted to be in the area near where Oakenveil formed, as confirmed by those at the time who could detect related magics. Some of the old records hinted at a Chosen One who had used the portal before to purge the world of various elements, by driving them through it to elsewhere or slaying them outright. These records were recopied, and with time and copies come errors in translation. If the portal, or “Oaken Veil” if you prefer was actually opened at this time, we're unsure.
Somewhat Recently, where the town of Oakenveil once was, and adjacent to the more recent town of Oakenshire, a cult formed based on some of these recopied versions of older deteriorated records which they acquired from somewhere, somehow, we're not really sure. Basing their ambitions on imperfect data they formed what would come to be known as the Half Star Cult, due to the description of a portal stone, and they invented their own details out of misleading misinformation from there.
Recently two leading members of the Half Star Cult, who happened to control a decent number of undead minions, relocated where the portal should be underground and constructed a passage to it. One of those members, Markoff, set in motion a ritual from the misleading records to summon the Chosen One. We don't know why he wanted that. His cohort, a mage apprentice named Shork Lefar, ran support for this project from a nearby lair. We also do not know why he wanted to be part of this project. Markoff would never be able to explain his interest since he encountered The Party and the phrase “Shoot First, Ask Questions Later” became the way of things. RIP Markoff.
More Recently, a seasoned adventurer named Jack, who has spent his more recent years running a tavern very far away in Goldvale, on another continent entirely, was asked by an acquaintence to use a relic in Jack's poession to portal some bothersome critters far away. The relic happened to be one of the Half Star Portal Stones, which must have been founds or looted by Jack on some adventure earlier in his life. If Markoff doing a ritual triggered this course of events, we'll never know. Not knowing anything significant about where a half star portal stone sends things, the critters in question, the “AAP”, walked through and came out at The Oakenveil Portal. Not long after that they would find the lair of Shork Lefar and murder him, officially ending any hope of anyone being able to explain how all these more recent events came to pass near the Oaken Veil. With only misleading ancient texts, and few of those at that, still existing, the lore around the Half Star Portal Stones must end there for now.
