Wizard

The Wizard Class to function properly needs a few notes in this campaign setting.

Reading Spellbooks

According to the PHB on page 165 only someone who owns a spellbook can read it directly. ANYONE ELSE must cast the Identify spell. That makes that particular spell very valuable. There may be rare exceptions to this rule, but if so they will always be specified. So you're probably wondering, “what if I don't have that spell, and I can never read a new spellbook I found or bought?” That's where you either plan to take the Identify spell when you gain new spells by leveling up, or you consult an NPC who might be able to help you.

Copying Spells

The 5.5 rules for copying spells can be found in the PHB on page 167 and see entirely fair. Note that there are conditions, timing and prices for copying things into your spellbook, vs copying things from your spellbook to elsewhere. Also note the wise advice about having a backup spellbook.

  • It isn't clarified well but known cantrips must also be contained in your spellbook.
  • We shall enact a homebrew rule that one spell = one page of spellbook, regardless of level.
