Beavers
Beavers are large, semi-aquatic rodents famous or infamous for building dams and changing their surrounding environment. In this campaign setting, the Bellows Of Beaver Summoning, a magical item, was introduced and beavers have been summoned to an unnatural amount in various locations.1)
Beaver Faqs
- Beavers can grow to just over 3 feet long for their body and another foot long of tail.
- Beavers can weigh up to 60 pounds. That's as heavy as a Halfling.
- Beaver teeth are bright orange & can be as large at 12 inches. The orange is from iron content in the teeth, not the aftermath of a fresh bloody kill as we've learned, because beavers don't usually go on the offensive like that, nor lust for meat.
- Beavers use some oil from their own glands to keep their thick fur dry and waterproofed. They probably also do this to look sexy for other beavers on beaver date nights.
- Beavers can stay submerged for up to 15 minutes and see well under water. We should probably refer to this as having “Water Vision.”2)
Behavior and Family
- Beavers are not players. They like to be monogamous.
- Beavers live in family groups usually called a colony. Typically this involves a couple parental beavers and their kids.
- Beavers slap their tails to warn of danger, particularly against water, to make a good loud noise. An angry beaver is also pretty easy to spot by this sound too. Don't piss off the beavers.
Beaver Dam Ecology
Beavers make dams using wood, rocks and mud. This slows down streams, blocks drainage ditches, and tends to create wetlands. This has an effect of filtering water, pushing water sideways from its original path, perhaps creating some flooding. Anything downstream benefits from this by a clearer filtered water runoff. These dammed areas create new fishing holes and for the sake of a fantasy RPG like ours they also create new pools of water where anything aquatic loving…ANYTHING3)…could move in. There is also a notable effect of beavers gnawing down trees around their dam areas changing the landscape.
Where could something like this be a disaster? As an example, if beavers were allowed to do this sort of thing, hypothetically, unchecked in perhaps Goldvale, the results would likely flood out large chunks of the town, destroy the Goldfish Pond based scenario, and perhaps make the place too attractive to new threats like magical krakens who would sense a new water scenario.4)
