ORCS / ORKS aka Half-Orcs

When the 2024 D&D / “5.5e” whatever you want to call it came around and orcs became this seemingly friendly humanoid race to play instead of the monsters of old, I was pissed off. I STILL AM! Orcs are going to be MONSTERS in my games. That said long ago, like, LONG ago, back in the days of 2nd Edition, I ran with a homebrew set of orcs as a playable race I called “Orkastians”, a splintered faction of orcs that ended up overseas from the main lot, and turned themselves into scholars. It was fun, but it didn't kill off the monster version in my games.

Seems like newer D&D makes orcs into far too pleasant and player capable of a race. So to my players I suggest if they insist on playing an orc from the newest incarnation, that I as the DM will only be satisfied if we spell it as “Ork” with a K. Orcs with a “C” will continue to exist as the delightful low lever monsters I want and need them to be. Orks with a K, I guess I'll cross that bridge when my players land on that finally. But a real orc, with a C, is a monster damnit.

I've decided the best way to think of Orcs in the 2024 Edition / 5.5e D&D Players Handbook is to consider them to be “Half Orcs” like there were in former editions. Full blood real orcs are the true monster orcs. Anything that is an “orc” character is watered down genetics at play & will likely be called “Ork”.

Notable Orcs

1)
At least according to the internet.
2)
Not going to touch that until someone forces the issue.
